Dear Bloom Township District 206 Families,

The families of District 206 are always in my thoughts as we continue with shelter-in-place and remote learning. We are presently converting all of our processes to operate as a remote learning school to meet the ever-changing demands of our current landscape. As I engage in daily meetings to stay on the forefront of information pertaining to COVID-19, the fiscal outlook, and overall educational shifts, I am grateful that our district has been able to remain steady throughout the movement. As we are finding ways to cope with our new social norms, there is something to be said for social interaction. I look forward to seeing all of the students and staff once everyone is able to return to school.

We are in our second week of remote learning. I enjoy hearing about the variety of ways in which our teachers are engaging their students in learning. We have a creative and caring staff and their work does not go unnoticed. Here is a link to the PATCH, which highlights some of their great work!  https://patch.com/illinois/chicagoheights/bloom-206-finds-new-ways-educate-amid-covid-19.  Additionally, I have attached a link to our Bloom Township YouTube channel with a variety of instructional resources which can be accessed by families and staff. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvPCYKuxm_GSnUZmWyd7Keg.

As stated by our State Superintendent, Dr. Carmen I. Ayala, “We know the COVID-19 pandemic can wear on every resource — from food and shelter to our emotional bandwidth and mental health. Fortunately, the Illinois Department of Human Services has launched a support line called Call4Calm that is reachable via text. Individuals who want to speak with a mental health professional can text the word “TALK” or “HABLAR” (for Spanish speakers) to 552-020. Within 24 hours, that individual will receive a call from a mental health professional employed by a local community health center. People can also text other terms, like “unemployment” or “food” or “shelter” to the same number to receive information on how to navigate and access supports and services. Call4Calm is free, and individuals who use it can remain anonymous.”

Additionally, many Illinoisans are currently in the process of completing the census for 2020. If you have not already completed it, I encourage you to do so. It can be completed by phone, online, or by mail.

Governor Pritzker announced on Friday that school closure will continue through the rest of this school year. As a result, we are preparing virtual end of year activities for your students. As you continue to partner with us in education, please feel free to reach out to your student’s teachers with any questions. A survey was sent out to capture your insights and that of your student regarding our implementation of remote learning. If you have not completed the survey, please access this link.

As always, feel free to reach out to me if can be of assistance. I thank you for your continued support of our schools and community.
